See How Easily You Can Avoid These 3 Common Mistakes in Video Marketing

by Josh Garcia on June 1, 2010

video marketing

If you are an internet marketer one of the simplest forms to connect with your target audience is by using video marketing.

Most individuals prefer to watch a video than reading. Video marketing also allows you to deliver a more accurate message.

When a  visitor lands on your blog or site they want to know who you are and what do you have to offer. Using video is a great way to deliver that message.

The best part about video marketing it builds trust which is very important if you want to increase your business.

Before I dove into video marketing, I visited a handful of blogs that were using videos. That gave me a better understanding of what not to do when I started.

Here are the 3 most common errors I found in video marketing so you can avoid them yourself.

1. Reading from the screen: This is the most common issue I came across. Individuals reading word for word from their script.

Don’t miss understand me here, it is OK to read from the screen. After all, this is how news reporters read their scripts on a teleprompter.

The problem is when you have the camera to close to your face it shows that you are reading something because of the movement of the eyes.

The best way to correct this is by placing the camera in a distant if you are going to read from the screen.

2. Not looking into the camera: When you are not looking into the camera you are not making eye contact with your audience.

It’s important that you look at them by looking at the camera. This will allow you to make a connection when you are communicating. Don’t forget to smile. :)

3. Mispronouncing common words: If you are going to use a script or bullet notes and you have a word that is hard to say…Remove it!

Nothing looks funny when you are in a video and mispronouncing words.

You’ll want to practice what you are going to say before you hit the record button. This way it will minimize the potential errors I just discussed.

If you plan on using video marketing as a strategy to generate leads and traffic to your blog or site prepare yourself for it. It is a powerful form of communication with your target audience.

Hey Josh,

Haha, some very funny, yet simple mistakes that can make you look like an amateur to a prospect. You don’t have to be a hollywood producer, but eye contact, and your posture in general can make a big difference.

Hi Josh,

These are excellent video creation tips.

I began to shoot videos again recently and can appreciate your take. Be natural and don’t try to talk about a topic which you aren’t comfortable with. This will help to keep your eyes directed at the camera and you won’t feel the need to read a script when you know something by heart.

Practice makes perfect! Watch yourself again and again….you’ll get it right eventually or if you’re talented right off the bat ;)

Thanks for sharing your insight.

Thanks for the useful tips Josh.

I like a little action, movement, in a video where the person is talking to the camera like a friend, verses sitting at a desk.

Hi Peter,

It does help when someone is being natural to keep the audience attention. It is hard to watch a video when someone is stiff and looks uncomfortable.

Reading into the screen is by far the worst offender on the list. It comes across as someone reading a script so they don’t sound sincere at all.

Also, a lot of time you’re going to be nervous when you get in front of the camera. You’ll find that it’s a little more difficult when you speak. Here’s a really great tip I learned in video production: before you shoot your video, press and hold down on your tongue for a few seconds – this will relax the muscles and allow you speak more easily.

I know it sounds silly but believe me, try it and see how clearer you’ll be speaking.

hey Josh,

Great mistakes to avoid. The big one I see a lot of is reading and sounding like it’s being read.

One way that works really well is to only read the high level bulleted items, then everything else is spoken from your heart. This will allow you to at least focus in on the particular item you’d like to discuss without having to come off as reading and sounding like a robot.

Hi Jerome,

That is the secret when you are reading from the screen use bullet points. This will allow you to stay focus and within the topic. If you are going to put items on a screen make sure that the camera is not close up to the face.

Hey Josh,

Totally agree with you on the reading of the script! Have an idea of what you want to say and just go for it! It doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters is looking comfortable and talking to your audience using eye contact, like you said.

Even the best stumble occasionally…no biggie, just keep going! It looks better than reading the script!

Have a wonderful week!

Hey Josh,

I’m a freak when it comes to reading posts, I prefer reading than video. But MOST people do like video more and I totally agree with the points that you made here. I think that when you take a little time to memorize what you’re going to say and keep more eye contact with the camera, I think your video give you more of a confident presence. You look more like a leader and people can see your personality A LOT better through video. I also like to add captions and title pages to my videos to keep my people engaged. I use Windows Live Movie Maker for free :)

Hey Josh,

Funny you should mention the first issue about reading from a script, I used to do that. The videos would look bad.

So, I threw the scripts out, and just had a few bullet points in my head to expand on, works like a charm! :)

Thanks for this.

Hey Josh,
A video communicates much strongly with the audience if done correctly. And from my personal experience it starts becoming better and better the more you practice and of course eye contact is the most vital thing here. The more you practice and the more relaxed you become before the camera. Thanks for the post josh

Josh,

Looking at the camera is critical, I agree. There is a such a pile of bad videos out there from people that are looking all over the place. Your customer needs to feel as if you are only speaking to them, not a group of people.

I would add that it would be a good idea to adress the person as “you” a lot instead of using group words, like “team.”

Excellent tips Josh and all mistakes that we can and have probably made at some point in our learning. I also think keeping videos short is what will attract people to view them. I for one know that if I am pushed for time I will not watch video posts that are longer than 5 min. So I am thinking there must people who do the same thing when they get to my site and there’s a 10 min video waiting for them. Ha ha

Josh my man…awesome video tips! I personally write my bullet points as a draft WordPress post and then create my videos “from the heart” as others have mentioned above. I find that it is the most natural for me and for the viewers. Also lets me keep my eye on the camera the entire time.

If you feel the need for a teleprompter, there is an excellent website that lets you type your text and it will scroll it for you at the speed you like so you can read it off the screen. This would work really well if you are using a webcam and are sitting a few feet back from your computer.

Great tips mate, it feels really weird when you first get on camera.

You just got to do it and get the bad videos out the way.

My own tip would be to make sure your audio quality is good, poor video is something you can deal with but if the sound is bad a lot of people will leave quick.
