We all know that writing content using keywords effectively will give your blog a success within the search engines.
We also know that it will drive organic traffic to your blog.
You must have a balance of writing content with keywords for the search engines. As well, writing content for readers to provide them valuable information.
This is what that most bloggers struggle with.
Should you write for your readers or search engines?
It is critical to have search engine find your material with keywords. Especially, if you are building a business based around organic search.
Writing content must satisfy both search engines and your customers. After all, it is your customers who are carrying the credit cards to purchase the products you promote.
With that said, your blog readers should always be more important to you since they are the ones that will help your online success. Of course, there is a way you can satisfy both your readers and search engines.
All you have to know is how to balance it out.
Do you realize that the typical business owners who take the time to study SEO creates a long list of keywords that they want to use.
But the big mistake I see business owners do is use all of the keywords in their post. In other words, they keyword stuff their article thinking search engines are going to find it.
This doesn’t work!
How to organize your keywords effectively:
- From your list select your main targeted keyword. This is the one that matches your content, has good search volume, and low competition.
- Take all of your other keywords and create smaller groups of 2-3 keywords for future use.
Let’s create a keyword rich written content.
Here is where you will have to start developing these skills. Keeping your readers engage and providing the search engines the keywords that you are wanting to rank for.
I’m going to provide a simple guideline that you can follow if you are not doing this.
- Make sure you are using your targeted keyword in your Title, URL, and tags.
- If possible you want to place the targeted keyword in the first sentence and last sentence. The rule is 1% of the total word count is how many times you want to use it in your content.
- Use the keyword in your description box if you are using any kind of SEO plugin for your blog.
There you have it! You just created a content for your readers and at the same time you used keywords for the search engines.
When you are writing don’t focus to much on your keyword. You want to let your writing content to flow. The keywords will come out naturally as you write.
Put your readers first and everything else will flow within your content.

Great post Josh. My answer would be yes!
It’s both SEO and HEO (Human Emotion Optimization).
Brian Clark of Copyblogger puts it this way:
“If your content isn’t good enough to attract good, natural links, it doesn’t matter how “optimized” that content is.
.-= Ty Tribble´s last blog ..Take All The Free You Can Get =-.
Hi Ty,
Thanks for sharing that from Brian Clark! So many panic over this topic and fumble every time.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Hey Josh,
I agree with you. It’s important to write your posts as if your speaking to them.
Yes SEO is great, but it shouldn’t be the only one you concentrate on. After all, it’s readers like us that are hear listening to you.
Really great post Josh.
Have a great weekend,
Jerome Ratliff
Hi Jerome,
People have to put their readers first and then the SEO portion will flow naturally.
Have a great weekend!
Josh,
That’s a great way to put it. I find that if I am really trying to SEO a post, then the content will never turn out as good as if I write for content first, and just keep those keywords in my mind.
A human has to read your post and be convinced to buy, or else it doesn’t matter how much the search engines like you.

Hi Joshua,
It is important not to forget your audience when writing. But like you said keep those keywords in the back of your mind when writing.
Have a great weekend!
Great writeup. if you can’t read it what’s the point?
Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! You have to put your target audience first.
Have a great weekend!
You have to have a good mix of both I think. If you don’t write it so people will read it then it doesn’t matter. On the other hand, it will be hard to get any SEO traffic if you ignore that part too.
Another good post,
Eric
Hi Eric,
Having a mixture of both will allow you to win every single game. Where most individuals have the problem is knowing how to balance it out.
Have a great weekend!
Josh,
This is the most important thing for any blogger to know…the balance is key!
Shannon
Hi Shannon,
Thank you for stopping and commenting! Once you figured out how to balance it out. That’s when the fun begins.
Have a great weekend!
Hey Josh,
That was good! When I go to some blogs that just have keyword mania in their post, it’s pretty easy to tell that’s what they really care about. Consistent, pertinent, and helpful content is key to make the entire blog rank higher, not just your post.

Hi Erin,
Providing quality valuable information is what is going to win every time. But you can’t ignore the SEO factor for free traffic. That is when you have to get good at balancing both.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Josh, this is great information. I think a lot of people get tripped up with this one, initially I did. But then Dave Wood said something that freed me, everything doesn’t have to be SEO optimized. Ding! I think it’s important to just get in the habit of writing well and writing consistently. Don’t get stressed or bogged down because you can’t find the perfect keyword, just write. As you perfect your craft, it’ll come naturally.
Plus your audience isn’t stupid. They know when you’re giving genuine content or when you;re keyword stuffing.

Hi Fontella,
Great point! At the beginning that is the best way to start. Just write! SEO content will happen naturally.

Josh,
Great tips on how to have a balance between keywords and content, never heard the term keyword stuffing, learn something new everyday. Just write you feel from the heart that you want to share the most important people, your audience will love it!

Great post Josh.
It’s quite possible to achieve the balance but it takes awareness which you have just highlighted in your post and then it takes practice, lots of it.
Enjoy your weekend.

1 you can only sell something to a person
2 googles whole algorithm is designed to promote and reward content that rewards the reader.
SEO is great but the best SEO has to be making it readable right?

I like your two pointers!
Have a great day!
When I write a post I write it for people first, then I read the post and change sentences/words to accommodate my targeted keyword phrase(s). I find this approach works really well.
Keyword stuffing is never pretty, especially if done badly.

I agree the content should engage both search engines and your readers. The trick is I think is to find the right keywords so you can create that flow of words without it sounding like something that would never come out your mouth. Thanks for the tips the 1% rule I will have to remember that. Thanks for the value Josh.
Steve Shoemaker
.-= Steve Shoemaker´s last blog ..Home Business Leads A Conversation =-.
Hi Steve,
That 1% percent rule has been around for a while. However, it is good to remind individuals on it. Sometimes, I even forget the rule.
Have a great day!
Great Post! For me, it’s always about the reader in the end. It doesn’t matter how much search traffic you get if your content is unreadable. But that doesn’t mean that SEO-minded writing isn’t possible.
It might seem like a strange example, but politicians are really quite skilled at structuring their content is a “SEO friendly” way. A goos political campaign is based around one or two themes (Hope and Change for Obama, for example). Speeches, ads and brochures cover a wide range of issues, but they also incorporate the main themes in a non-intrusive way that adds value.

Hi Josh,
Yes, I agree, there should be a good balance of keyword optimized articles on your blog to “value adding” articles that will keep your visitors coming back. I try to go by this: 1 informative, keyword optimized article to get them to your blog, 3 natural articles to keep them there. What do you think?

Hi Wayne,
As long as you write valuable content for your readers. You will continue to have loyal readers and pick up new readers. When you can mix it up with some SEO content the search engines will drive additional readers to your blog post.
Have a great day!
Great info Josh! As Search Engines evolve, it is MUCH more critical to keep the reader in mind, and provide useful, relevant and creative content. Thank goodness the days of blasting out articles with the keyword inserted every fifth word are gone!!!

Susanna
.-= Susanna Hess´s last blog ..Network Marketing – Video Making Tip =-.
Hi Susanna,
For someone starting out with their blog it is best to focus on writing for their audience. As they learn more about SEO. They can mix it in with their content.
Have a wonderful day!
Josh, you always provide great info in your posts and you’ve developed this amazing skill to attract activity in comment section, so its no longer simple comment place, its more discussion board. I have noticed the same fantastic thing going on with Hector’s posts
Now, about the subject of this post I (of course )agree with you .
My way is to fist come up with the subject that will benefit readers, than write it totally relaxed and I dont think about keywords and SEO at all at the beginning. After I finish, than I found good keyword to match my content and implement it on all those important places, by simple replacing words or sentences that are related to this keyword. And it worked for me just fine
Now Mr. Tribble mentioned HEO, and its so important to hit emotions , I so agree on that . There’s one tool that I use to check EMV (Emotional Marketing Value) of my headline and its called Headline Analyzer – http://www.aminstitute.com/headline/index.htm
and it measures volume of both intellectual, spiritual and empathetic potential of our headline.
Keep being fantastic Josh!
Hi Milena,
Thanks for sharing that link! I checked it out with a few of my headlines.
Have a great day!
Hi Josh,
I agree with you 100% that posts should have a balance between the reader and keyword optimization. This was an issue that I struggled with early on.
Now I use the same strategy that Milena uses-I write a post that will first benefit my readers then I try to match keywords to it.
Great Post!
Hi Grace,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I think this is something we all struggle with at the beginning.

Hi Josh,
Great tips, as usual!
It’s a tricky balance writing for the SERPS AND people, but well worth the effort.
.-= Derek Alvarez´s last blog ..Jim Yaghi reveals his Coffee Shop Marketing Secret! =-.
Hi Derek,
I remember when I first started my blog. I had no clue about keywords. Over time, you develop the skills to mix in both.
Have a wonderful evening!
Good advice Josh.
Writing for both is definitely the way to go.
I’d also mention that Search Engines also look for similar keywords (ie. search ~photo in Google and see they also bold the terms Images, Photography, Pic, Pictures, etc.). These similar keywords can be used throughout to create more human readable content and Google still knows what you are talking about.
- Sean
Hi Sean,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Thanks for mentioning that. Having related keywords in the article does help with the SEO.
