The Secret of Overcoming Procrastination

by Josh Garcia

Overcoming Procrastination

I would have to say that most online marketers at some point in their business will have to come up with a plan on overcoming procrastination.

I’m not sure if you are aware that procrastination is by far one of the deadliest diseases that will hold you back from achieving success.

There are ways that you can start implementing habits so you can overcome procrastination. I know that there are a million reasons why people don’t accomplish tasks.

Some folks will put off internet marketing because they will think that they don’t have enough experience or simply not good enough. Others just simply don’t want to start the process but they know it must get done.

Understand that you can stop this behavioral at any time. You just have to make the decision that it’s going to stop.

You have total control of stopping procrastination!

Let me share with you 3 steps that I had to implement early in my business for overcoming procrastination.

1. Perfection – If you take a hold that you are not perfect. You will be able to free yourself. Most individuals put off working on an online project because they are not good enough.

Here is a fact: Nobody is perfect! As long as you give it your best. You are doing better than most individuals.

2. What are your goals – The most mistakes individuals make that they set such high goals that is difficult to reach. By setting really high goals you are just setting yourself to procrastinate.

Set a goal that is attainable!

3. Relax – Don’t stress yourself about a situation you don’t have any control over. I see way too many individuals stress over situations that they can’t even control.

When you are relax you are able to focus on your task a lot clearer. Therefore the chance of putting something off is very slim.

Understand that overcoming procrastination is nothing more than overcoming a behavioral habit. Just look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself, “I accomplish everything that I put my mind on!”

This is the first place you have to start by reprogramming your mind. No one has ever said that achieving any level of success was going to be easy. If they did…They were not telling the truth!

I know what I just went over sounds very easy and it is. Only when you first believe it!

Hey Josh,

Great article on procrastination. Number 2 is a big one for me and a lot of people I know. We set high goals that isn’t attainable. As a result we procrastinate. It’s best to come up with goals that you can do that day. Taking little steps each day will lead you to success.

Another tip that’ll help is writing down what you need to get done and place somewhere so that it’s the first thing you see in the morning when you wake up.
Thanks for the post.

Hi Sherman,

I believe everyone is guilty of #2. After not hitting certain goals because we set them to high. Then we come into conclusion that we can still set a goal that is going to stretch us but attainable.

Have a great day!

Hey Josh,
Procrastination can be a big hurdle to your success. My two cents on how I overcame procrastination was by hugely motivating myself. When one is motivated he is able to overcome biggest hurdles on his way to success. Just do whatever motivates and of course set motivating and measureable goals. Setting a goal like building a house on the moon won’t take you anywhere where as a goal like having a beach side condo in san diego can activate you brain to pursue it. Thanks josh

Josh,

I try to put together a task list on my Blackberry that includes business tasks, house chores, anything that needs to get done.

If I don’t write that list, I am not getting everything done.

I like the first one, “nobody is perfect”. If we keep this in mind, it would make our goals easier to accomplish. Which means less procrastination.

Have a great day Josh!

Hi Tommy,

We all strive for perfection. Nobody that has a winner mentality wants to do to a half job. However, when you give it all you have you know that you are coming out as a champion.

Hi Josh,

Moving into action is my #1 procrastination killer.

#2? Moving into inaction. I hesitate sometimes because too much clutter is moving through my mind. By sitting calmly I let these garbage thoughts run in and out of my mind and I proceed.

Thanks for sharing the tips!

Hi Ryan,

That is great! It’s hard to procrastinate a task when you are in action mode. The toughest is getting yourself to get into action. Once that momentum kicks in…Nobody can stop you!

Have a great day!

Josh,

I once had a book called “how to stop procrastinating.” After only reading half of it 6 years later I finally thre the thing away. Talk about true procrastination. I find that the more we pile on out to-do lists, the more we end up running around like squirrels from theis project to that, without ever finishing anything.

I like to have just 3 things on my list. If I get them done that day then I can rst easy.

Josh if this were a disease it would be epidemic. A lot of people can come up with excuses not do something so much faster than an excuse to do something. We want it easy but it the people that battle this and stay focused who achieve.

Hi Steve,

I find it that with the excuses people make not to complete something. If they were to use that same energy at least they will have completed a project half way. Which is better than not doing anything at all.

Have a great day!

Hey Josh,

Procrastination is a fascinating topic to me. To put off doing what you know you need to do, or sometimes even WANT to do… humans are very strange creatures. The desire for the end goal simply has to become greater than the excuses.

Out of those 3, the first one has got me a couple of times. For example that offer I put together… it’s not perfect. However, it IS very good and highly valuable. I just had to tell myself that as I get better, I can always make that better too.

I probably won’t ever feel that it’s perfect. But perfectionists should always remember… YOU are your worst critic. Do your best and get it out there ASAP.

Thanks for another great post!
Susanna

I love the analogy Ready, Fire, Aim!

This sums it all up so perfectly because what we all get caught up doing is trying to perfect that last 5% of our efforts but the problem is that it holds us up indefinitely.

Instead, we should all be contempt with the majority of what we do and learn as we go. That’s the best way to do it 🙂

Josh, another master piece from you that I have to share asap 🙂

I’ve changed a lot very quickly, since I am perfectionist in all I do, but this business just changed me and made me take action even if I am not 100 % satisfied with how something came up. I’ve realized that if we wait until everything is perfect, we’ll never do much of anything..

Great stuff Josh,

I enjoyed your post Josh.

Tony Robins describes procrastination as the ‘silent killer’ because it takes hold of one like an addiction and then it is very difficult to get rid of.

Essentially all our behavior is driven by avoiding pain and gaining pleasure and we will do anything to avoid pain which explains why it’s so easy to procrastinate. The key lies in linking more pleasure than pain to what we want to achieve.
