by Josh Garcia on April 28, 2010

List Building

Business owners once you have your business blog up and running one of the goals is to build a list.

Building a list can be challenging at first if you don’t have a proper guideline.

Developing a strategy to build your list will make your project a lot easier.

If you don’t have a strategy or a plan for list building. You are not going to be able to build your list. If you can’t build a list that means your are not going to generate leads.

All you are going to have is a nice blog with great content that you giving away for free.

Let me share with you a simple plan to get your list building strategy going.

1. Know your target audience. By you knowing who you are targeting it is important for your list building strategy. Here is an example: If you are offering a product on list building, you shouldn’t expect to attract people that want information on link building. Make sure your what you are promoting is targeted to build your list quickly.

2. Provide an incentive. By giving your target audience an incentive to subscribe has been an effective strategy.

3. Don’t forget social media. Using social media sites have been a great way to use for list building. You just have to be careful on how you promote your blog or capture site. The key is to provide value to attract subscriber to your blog or site.

Here is one key component that you must apply as soon as you receive that first subscriber…Always maintain contact with the people on your list. You want to build a relationship with your list. You can maintain contact by daily post, offering promotions, or a monthly newsletter.

If you take care of the people on your list. They will take care of you. I know I’m on a lot of lists. :)

Hey Josh,

Gotta have the list growing and you gave some great ways of doing it.

It can be slow to start building it at first, but it picks up traction as you go, as long as you continue to build relationships and provide valuable content.

Great post!
Susanna

Hi Susanna,

I remember when this blog first launched. I thought I was going to have a flood of people opting-in to my list. Boy…did it open my eyes!

The key is to provide value and people will want to be part of your success.

List building is one of the most crucial and important elements for an online marketer. And of course Josh the target market has to be searched because there is no point selling beef to a vegetarian or an ice to an eskimo. Thanks for the post Josh

Josh,
You hit on the three key things anyone needs to start building a list. The biggest thing that people need to be concerned with is their target market. The one size fits all approach is one that you don’t want to take when building a list. The more targeted you can be, the more you can craft your bribe, and your message.

Good stuff,

Hi Eric,

When you know your target market. Now all you have to do is focus on providing them solutions for their problems. Then watch the list build up and continue to provide even more solutions to the people on your list.

The incentive factor is the real key. Once you can funnel someone to your sign-up page you have to give them something valuable enough so that they will part with their coveted email.

People treat their email addresses like gold, because they are tired of business owners trying to take from them without giving first. Provide your customers with value and they will give back in return. That’s how I built my list.

Hi Joshua,

You are so correct! People today are guarding their email address like their wallets in their back pocket (for guys atleast). Ladies I’ll let you fill in the blank.

Keep hearing the same…so the secret is continue providing your people on the list value and the list will take care of itself.

Have an awesome day!

Leads aren’t everything, but they are right up there with oxygen – Adaption of Zig Ziglar famous quote.

Your list is your gold in this industry. Without it you can not trade!

Which is why our blog post always give people the opportunity to join our list (just incase anyone was wondering why we always have our opt-in box a the bottom of every post).

Hey Josh,

Happy Wednesday. These three steps are great to follow when building list and what’s important is that none of them are skipped.

Especially #1. It’s like going to the grocery store without knowing what you have to buy. Have a plan by targeting the audience you are after. It’s CRITICAL.

Good stuff here.

Good stuff as usual, Josh!

I’m always impressed by the following you’ve been able to create for yourself at your blog… it’s inspiring to see (and I learn a thing or two about how to do the same at my blog).

The most important thing I try to keep in mind is, “Who am I targeting?”

This sets the foundation for EVERYTHING else…

Where I get my traffic…
What I offer for an opt in…
What I say in my emails…
What I offer for sale…
EVERYTHING!

Yep, building relationships with people on that list is fundamental because if you have a good relationship with the people on the list, you will automatically get more people onto your list. It’s just the way it works.

Sounds so simple when you break it down like that Josh,

I like the last point you made, you MUST keep in contact with people who join your list.

If they don’t hear from you for weeks or months, don’t expect them to open anything you send!

Thanks again,

It is important to visit social network sites and build relationship with the folks that are hanging out there. That is the best part if you hang out where people are hanging out you’ll build your list.

Have a great weekend!
