Are Your Goal Setting Being Eaten Up By This Deadly Disease?

by Josh Garcia on March 9, 2010

Goal Setting

Just about everyone has set goals. If not, what are you waiting for!

Now, the number one distraction has to be procrastination. This is common among many individuals that are working on their goals.

Sometimes this occurs because of setting unreasonable goals, but most of the times the problem is simply not having enough time.

It is easy to get discouraged when trying to work on a goal. Many times it can seem like it might take too much time to be able to achieve it, such as generating network marketing leads or creating a blog post.

I know it can be difficult to set the time aside to work on goals that might not be recognized for weeks, months, or years when most people have more immediate demands on their time.

Think about goals in terms of how success would impact your life if it happened today can sometimes be just the encouragement a person needs to take action.

For example, instead of just setting a goal of writing a post this week, imagine how good it would make you feel if you already wrote your post today. Imagine how much more impact you just gave someone else that read it, and how great it would feel to open your email and there you have a lead sitting in your inbox. The more real you can make it in your mind, the more you will be able to imagine it really happening.

This type of positive visualization is much more effective than dwelling on a problem. Visualizing the positive effects can be very inspiring and empowering. Even if the goal is quite large, it can seem more achievable if you can visualize the positive effect of achieving the goal.

Once you become truly committed to achieving a goal, try setting some smaller measurable goals that you can work on in pursuit of your larger goal. After all, taking the first step is often the hardest part of achieving any goal.

Hey Josh,

This is great. There is a wave of inspiration going around lately. I can’t help but write about it myself. People are drawn to inspiration. The problem is that most people would rather learn than do. It is a major hinderance to the success cycle.

Setting goals should not be looked at as an avenue to success. It should be looked at as the avenue to success.

You can’t celebrate the small victories if you are not aware of them.

Great post Josh. You are the second person to make me think today.

Hi Chris,

It is to easy to get stuck in learning and not taking action. I hear this too often, “I want to learn it before…”

I say, “Do and learn in the process of doing”

Have a great day…

Josh,

Your reply to Chris reminded me of this quote I love:

“Character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries.” James Michener

You are right on about not waiting until you learn. Doing IS learning!

Twila,

That is a great quote! Thanks for sharing that with the rest of us.

Hey Josh,

Great article! You know I’m not a procastinator, so I make my list and go by what is THE most important on that list and just go down the line in order of importance. Obviously, some things have a learning curve or trial and error curve that might be time consuming so it might have to wait until my husbands day off so he can entertain my little buddy ; )

As I was reading it, a thought came to mind about procrastination. Do you think that sometimes fear leads to procastination? Fear of not getting it right, or fear of failing? I really think with some people it is a factor.

Keep up the Great Work!

Hi Twila,

That is a great strategy to take for a busy individual like yourself. Most people don’t even think about creating a list.

Now, fear does hold people back. However, fear will also prevent anyone from achieving their greatness. In my mind, I have it programmed that I must embrace failure. Failure is my best friend. Without failure, how will I know to grow to the next level. All it takes is some reprogramming of the mind to not be afraid of it. Thanks for this topic…

Chat with you later…

Josh,

I have to agree Small measurable goals are so much easier to run with. Also, having your post for your blog done the day before, for example, is a great feeling – because you feel organized and relaxed the next day.

Great post my friend.

Wayne,

By doing small measurable goals everyday at the end of the month. You’ll look and say, “That was awesome!”

I love having my post done the day before. When the month is over, I look at what I wrote…at least 20 post in a month. All by doing a small measurable goal daily.

Have a great day…

Great points Josh,

Something I find helpful is just writing a list of next steps. It’s a great feeling crossing them off!

Hi Derek,

Something about scratching them off the list, that feeling of accomplishment!

Hey Josh

It was a goal setting course I attended which helped to form my current state of mind.
I wrote about it on my blog (look in the personal development section).

A goal is a dream with a deadline. Until a dream has an action plan behind it, it is merely a figment of imagination. Turning a dream into a goal is empowering stuff as you know at some point your dream is going to come true!

Great post.

Hi Dwayne,

You shared some inspiring words there. I have that written down on my whiteboard “A goal is a dream with a deadline”

Have a good evening…

Hey Josh,
Great post. Really like Dwaynes quote too. Goals are key, but they are insignificant if you don’t take action to achieve them. Procrastination is definitely one of the key killers of goals. I am gonna do that tomorrow, turns into tomorrow, and tomorrow.

Josh –

Procrastination can really slow down your business’s momentum.

I was recently networking about this on BetterNetworker forum and it seems more people have this problem. For those that don’t have this problem, I see them as having a plan or a goal if you will.

They are determined to succeed and they don’t let this disease plague their business.

Hi Jerome,

It’s amazing how many individuals procrastinate and the same people complaint that they are not succeeding.

One of the affirmations I say to myself often is, “Treat today as if it’s your last!” It’s amazing how much you can get done when you have that programmed into your subconscious mind.

I enjoyed your post Josh. One of the best lessons I ever learned about goals is that any worthwhile goal is going to mean feeling uncomfortable. It’s only when one accepts this and takes action regardless that progress is made.

Years ago I set some physical goals for myself that included getting up to go to gym at 5am every day. For the first few weeks I would wake up every morning and and tell myself that I did not feel like going which I accepted as a legitimate reason not to go. Of course I didn’t feel like it, why would I? It was winter which meant it was dark, cold, often wet and my warm bed was far more appealing.

Then it occurred to me that I was never going to feel like it so I might as well stop wasting my time. The very next morning I got up and went despite not feeling like it and I have been doing the same thing for over 10 years now. Feeling or not feeling like it is just not a criteria.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for sharing that story with us. I know everyone reading it can relate with it one way or another. To accomplish anything you’ll always have to get out of comfort zone.

I’ll never forget this story that was told on how eagles learn to fly. The mother eagle takes the eaglet from the nest when she knows the eaglet is ready to fly. Flies up high in the sky and let’s go of it. The mother eagle will continue this process until the eaglet realizes that they have wings and can fly. Talk about coming out of comfort zone. In this case the eaglet has no choice but to take action. Sometimes that is what it takes. Just take action and everything else will correct itself.

Have a great day…

Hey Josh,

Both Twila and you gave me some food for thought. Thank you!

Procrastination and Fear are kind of related, I think. There’s a great book out by Brian Tracy called “Eat that Frog.” It’s basically a metaphor for tackling the most challenging task of your day first. Once you have eaten that “frog” everything else seems like a piece of cake.

Mike Dillard, once wrote about a little free software program that made him thousands of dollars. It’s called “Notepad.” He used it to make a “List” of things to do the next day.

Thanks you two for reminding me to make that LIST and eat that FROG!

You ROCK!!

Hi Ilka,

It is always great to see one of your comments. :)

I heard a lot of Brian Tracy CD’s, but never read that book. Thanks for mentioning it and for sharing your story.

I swear, that I learn more from the comments alone. I wish more people would comment so we can learn more from their experience.

Have a wonderful day…

Sometimes I think the comments are the gravy or juice of the steak which is the post itself. I love reading the comments :)

By the way, there’s a little 3 minute movie of “Eat the Frog.” I posted it on my blog about a year ago, when I was posting about procrastination.

You can just click on my name above to get to it :)

Ilka & Josh,

Oddly enough someone sent me an e-version of the book. I have it saved on my laptop, but just haven’t read it yet. I tend to prefer a real book.

I too will have to check out your movie on your site Ilka.

Thanks for saving me some time!

Never read that book. Going to put it on the book list.

BTW…Checked out the video. That makes total sense. A little side note here: I don’t like frogs, especially tree frogs. For some reason they really like to hang out by my front door in the spring/summer. Yuck!
