If You Don’t Install SI Captcha Plugin Now, You’ll Hate Yourself Later

by Josh Garcia on May 14, 2010

SI Captcha

Receiving spam comments and going through them has to be the biggest headache.

The sad part spammers really abuse it with their automated commenting systems.

Spammers will try to spam everything if they can get away with it. They’ll spam blog post, forums, and emails.

Lately I have been receiving way more spam comments than any other time. At least 60-70 a day easily. The most I’ve received was 100 in a day.

This issue is occurring because of the automated spam programs that are available. I have to say I’m glad that Akismet catches all of them into the spam folder.

The worse part is that I have to swift through the spam folder to catch a real comment that got sent there from a real person. The part I dislike the most is having to read those crazy spam comments. Where I wouldn’t even dare to write about.

I going to share with you a simple plugin that I added to stop spam comments.

The name of the plugin is SI Captcha.

It’s a Captcha image verification spam-blocker

This plugin rocks! You’ll find it by the submit button when commenting. It’s been 24 hours since I had it installed. I received zero spam comment in my spam folder. Remember I was receiving 60-70 on average per day.

SI Captcha is a popular plugin within the WordPress community.

Basically the way it works, before a person can submit a comment. The reader has to type the image verification text in a textbox to allow the comment to get process.

The only disadvantage I can see. It adds one more extra step before the reader can submit their comment. But this one more extra step is all worth it than having to go through a bunch of ugly spam comments in the spam folder.

With SI Captcha if you are having problem reading the image it will allow you to hear it.

If you don’t have a Captcha anti-spam device installed. I highly recommended it!

I’m still amazed how I don’t even have one automated spam comment in my spam folder. Now, this won’t stop a spam comment if someone is manually entering the comment.

Here is the link to the plugin: SI Captcha

Josh…

Sounds cool, I’m glad you don’t have to deal with deleting a whole bunch of spam comments.. But,

..has it affected commenting? I mean, I know I’m gonna continue sharing my thoughts on your blog, as well as your loyal readers.. but my concern is, when you add an extra step, does that decrease the number of real comments you’re getting..

maybe it’s to soon to tell.. but that will be great info..

thanks
Have a great weekend

Hi Hector,

It hasn’t affected the commenting. Here is why, readers who own blogs understand the headache of dealing with spam commenting. When I’m visiting someone else blog I don’t even think about it. I just type in the security key and hit submit.

The real pain is when you have to go through the spam folder and read all of the garbage spams in there to dig out the golden ones like yours. I’m not sure if you know I always have to dig your comments from the spam folder. That is why I go through them. To catch champions like you in there.

Have a great weekend!

Really?? …that’s so weird.. You told me that once, but I thought it just happened one time.. (I’m offended by your SPAM system) :D

But, you’re right. I don’t think about it either when I’m commenting. Thanks for the response. If the spam gets too outta hand (like your 50-70 days) I’ll definitely add this plugin.. but for now 5-7 don’t really bother me..

talk soon Josh,
Hector..

Now, it’s easy to pull anyone that gets sent to the spam folder. :)

People are so use too adding captcha code when they are submitting information online. That it is not going to stop people from commenting.

Hi Dwayne,

Welcome back from your vacation…I know you call it ‘Holiday’ ;)

I know you use a comment program where the readers have to login in first. That is a spam prevention. However, I know that you can’t use nifty gadgets like CommentLuv.

Hi Josh,

Well the question I asked in my comments to you yesterday was answered by today’s post – thanks.

I have to agree a little bit with Hector but only when it comes to sites that use really challenging Captcha systems. You know the type… where you can hardly read the letters, so you have to request new letters five times or worse than this, where no matter how carefully you type the letters in they are always wrong and you lose your whole comment. Man those are soooooooooooooo annoying. I do think twice about leaving comments on those sites.

The one that you use here is simple and easy and of course I enjoy visiting your site so I would fill in any captcha here! :)

Hi Marcus,

I know what you mean by having to put your face up to the screen because you can’t read it. Hopefully, with the captcha system I put in place the words are big enough to read them. I think they are pretty big.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hey Josh,

Great tip, glad Marcus asked as I was thinking the same thing! Just added the plugin to my site and it’s working a treat.

I have been using Akismet along side WP-Spamfree plugin and this seems to cut out most of the nasties, but I must admit I had never thought of the unfortunate genuine commenter’s that must get caught up in the spam file from time to time.

Well hopefully we will have a spam free day!

Chat later

Marc

P.S. Josh the captcha code box isn’t very clear, I had to look at my site to see if I was being blind. Looks like the plugin picks up on the theme or comment design in place as it’s very clear on mine. Just thought id point it out, don’t want you loosing any comments. Think you can change it in the Advanced options in the plugin setting :-)

Hi Marc,

It’s day two using it and not one spam comment in the spam folder. The only time I had to go in there was to pull out Hector’s comment. Thanks for giving me heads up on the captcha code box not being clear. I just increase the size of it. Hopefully this helps out!

Yes, this info is basic. But just like you said some folks need a place to start. Hopefully It helps people think twice about it. The one thing that I know is going to happen as the Alexa ranking drops. The spam comments increases. This is a great way to fight back!

Hey Josh,
SI Captcha seems a cool spam blocker. This is just a little more effort to
get you rid of the crazy spam comments. Aksimet also seemed a good spam blocker but if
a genuine comment adder gets into the spam folder than SI Captcha seems to deliver the goods. Thanks for the post.

Hi Yadvinder,

Akismet is great at catching spam comments and placing them in the spam folder. However, this captcha code is great at stopping them at the front gates.
