Business Owners: Why Do 80% Business Blogs Fail? Hint…Writing Tips!

by Josh Garcia on April 13, 2010

Writing tips for blogs

Creating a blog for your business is the wisest investment to make today.

Blogs allow you to provide information to your prospects by providing solutions to their needs.

As an owner of a blog, one of the necessities is that you must acquire simple basic writing tips.

When you are able to provide solutions to your prospect by typing words without trying to sell anything.

It creates credibility!

When this strategy is done properly. You will see your online presence increase for your business. It will help you grow your reputation in your business niche and ultimately make you money.

Let me share with you the top 3 writing tips that I had to acquire to make my business blog a success.

Know who you are talking too

You must know who are you writing for? By knowing your target market you will be able to speak their language. Therefore, you will be able to speak directly to them.

If you are providing a solution, what is it that your prospects are looking for? What are some of the problems your prospect are facing? By knowing this, you can provide solutions to them and this will create a trust and ultimately confidence that they are dealing with a business owner who knows their niche.

By knowing the questions of your prospect. You can address them and be seen as the expert in that field.

Here is one of the most commons problems I’m seeing right now. Business owners who currently have an online presence but are not targeting any particular audience. They are spraying all over the place.  Or targeting a market that is so saturated.

You still be able to generate something from it. But that impact is like eating crumbs. When there are other markets that are wide open and you can be eating a feast.

Simple formula to remember:

Identify Market + Provide Solutions by writing to them = You are seen as the expert (creates leads and generate a profit)

After all, isn’t that the reason to own a business. To generate a profit.

Keywords, Keywords, Keywords

I constantly tell myself this: Don’t forget about keywords!

Two reasons why you want to use keywords:
1. Search engine looks for them and measures the relevancy of your post.
2. People do searches on search engine base on keywords.

When you start doing keyword research, try to think what your audience is looking for. You can start by using Google’s free keyword tool to accomplish this. The great part is that you’ll discover hundreds or even thousands of other keywords you can use.

Make sure to use one keyword in your post or article to attract the search engines and prospects that are searching for those specific keywords. A strategy I like to use is using phrases as keywords.

This is an example of a phrase keyword, “how to create a blog.”

Make sure it is readable

Remember your prospects are looking for quick answers to their solutions. So make it short, bold sentences, add bullet points. Your prospects love to see How To’s or Lists. Information that is easily readable and understandable.

When you can provide good valuable concrete information that is well organized. You will be able to out perform your competition every single time.

After reading your content, you should offered them something of value but for free to exchange their name, email, and phone number. You can as well have a section on the blog offering your services or product. Prospects will click on them.

As you continue to provide valuable content to your readers. Some will purchase your product or use your services immediately. Others, will purchase products or use your services later. Then you have those that will not purchase however, they’ll recommend your business to others.

Follow these simple steps and you will have a successful business blog generating you a profit.

To Your Success,

Hey Josh,

Great advice, especially about being specific to your target market. I’m guilty of not practicing this and need to work on it. Then again, I’m not sure. The things I choose to write about are usually things I think some people are looking for an answer to. I really need to learn some keyword and SEO stuff. OK, I’m babbling LOL

Have a great day!

Hi Twila,

Targeting a market is vital. I’m seeing too many individuals going after the same market. When targeting the same market like everyone else. You are basically working for a small amount of profit and leads. Take the same work load and apply it to a different market. You’ll see a huge different in leads and profit.

Have a great day!

Dangit,
Twila beat me to it. I was gonna tell you that your blog sucks. You hit on the most important, yet most overlooked things that any business owner should be doing to create a dominating online presence. You are going to have to start charging people for this kind of info.

Josh, you’re absolutely right. Any business that wants to have an online presence MUST have a blog, and it’s got to be well written.

People loved to be talked to, not talked at, which is what most businesses do really well. Target your niche, do your keyword research, and write like you would like to have someone speak to you.

Keep those things in mind and you’ll find success knocking on your door.

Talk soon,

Hi Mike,

A business owner not having a blog as a central point is missing out on an unlocked opportunity.

When you offer solutions, instead of trying to sell something. You will get more prospects knocking on your door.

Have a great day!

Those are all key things to think about. I’ll admit I don’t always remember all 3 in some of my posts. ;)

I should print that out and stick it to the wall behind my comp! lol

Thanks Josh!

Hi Yadvinder,

Providing valuable content to an audience is where a lot of business owners get stuck. I hear from other business owners always saying that they don’t know what they should write about. Once you start writing, your mind will start looking for challenges people are having so you can provide a solution.

Have an awesome day!

Good solid advice as always Josh.

Identifying your market saves you so much time and energy. You can focus all your ideas to the markets you have identified instead of writing for everyone.

Sound tips Josh! I think developing one’s own voice while providing value takes a bit of time and then when you keep putting it out there one automatically develops a following. Then one needs to make sure one sticks with what is working.

Hi Josh,

sound advice, thanks for sharing. I like especially that piece of advice that we have to know who we are talking to.

Blogging is about writing (although we can do a lot with podcasts and videos). That means we have to learn how to write. It’s the same with learning to drive a car. By writing without being perfect we practise and get better at it every single day. Learn and practise, learn and practise, learn and practise.

Take care

Oliver
