Understanding keyword research is a process of finding which words or phrases people like to enter into the search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, Bing) when they are looking for your information or product…So yes it is a secret!
For example if my product was sports drink, I know (from research) that the keywords people use to find sports drink are the following: sport drink mix, sports energy drink, and energy sports drink. Of course there are a lot more, these are just the most popular three.
One of the many tools for finding keywords is the Google Keyword Tool which is free. There are great paid keyword tools that are available. For now, let’s just stick with the free tool. Which allow you to enter a single keyword and it will return related keywords.
Knowing what keywords people are searching for is the first step, secondly you need to know just how many people are searching for each keyword. Around 40% of searchers usually click the number one ranked website, so any keywords with over 1000 searches per month is worth looking at.
Again the Google Keyword Tool can give you data regarding how many people are searching for each keyword. By now you know what keywords people are searching for, and how many people are searching for each one.
But that’s not all, the last part of keyword research is to check the competition. After all if it wasn’t for competition we’d all be on the first page of Google for the keywords which get hundreds of thousands of searches a month!
Assessing the competition for each keyword requires a bit of guesswork, because only the search engines know exactly how strong the competitions websites are compared to yours.
Luckily PageRank is a good indicator of how strong a page is, as a rough guideline if the websites currently ranking on the first page of the search engines have a PageRank lower than four you should be able to outrank them with a good website and some quality backlinks.

Hey Josh,
Great post as usual. Keyword research is essential. I use a few different tools, paid and free to help me with this but to be honest I mostly use the Google Keyword Tool which does a mighty fine job. One thing I find odd is that some people take the time to research their keywords then they create content which has nothing to do with the keyword!! What’s that all about? Do that too often and you will do your credibility a lot of harm.

Hi Marcus,
Yeah, I know that there are great tools on the market. But for some reason we all love free stuff…Thanks for mentioning about content having nothing to do with the keyword. I do come across it on other blogs. Thanks for stopping by!
Have a great weekend…
Josh
Keyword research is indeed very important to any internet based business. It is the starting point and if done correctly it can bring you close to success. I also use many online tools for doing keyword research, iSpionage being the primary tool for me and of course the well known Google keyword tool. It is vital to have the best keywords at hand, not too expensive but yet searched for, including long tail which are a plus for your keyword strategy, being easier to rank for. I cannot see any better way to get a hold on these keywords but using reliable keyword suggestion tools.
Hey John,
Thanks for stopping by! Using the right keywords is very important. But knowing the long tail keywords is like hitting a gold mine. The competition is very limited and ranking high is always a smile.
Have a great weekend…

Great Post Josh,
I love the Google Keyword Tool, I always run my keywords through there to check the advertiser competition.
Those new to this should type in Josh’s sports drink example. You’ll quickly see how powerful this tool is.
Hi Chris,
Yes, I can spend a lot of time in Google Keyword Tool. It is a very helpful free tool. For online business owners, it is a must!
Have a great weekend…

Hey Josh,
Good post! I use the Google Keyword Tool, but what I then do to take it further is I assess which keywords are likely to stay on the list based on their CTR.
With those that stay on this list, they get incorporated in my posts, articles, you name it. Also, they just don’t get incorporated in just for the sake of putting them in. There has to be some congruency.
Have a rockin’ Friday!
Jerome Ratliff
Hi Jerome,
You gotta love that tool!
Do you mind explaining what is CTR?
Enjoy your Friday…
Josh
You bet Josh… It stands for Click Through Rate
Thanks buddy…
Hey Josh,
Some good points there, I do use The Free Google keyword tool, However I am also a fan of Market Samurai. It can get a bit geeky using it, because it literally gives you everything and you have to fight your mind going into melt down! (ha).
Great post my friend!
Hi Wayne,
Looks like people love the free Google Keyword Tool. I have heard of Market Samurai, but that is all I can say.
Haha…mind melt down! I feel like sometimes…
Have a great weekend!
Josh
Josh,
It is nuts to see people going after keywords that are so highly trafficed it would take them years to rank well. Or, people going after keywords that don’t get any traffic. I use a tool from Themezoom that is, in my humble opinion, the billy bad A of all keyword tools. It delivers results in real time and takes into account LSI for conversations that are currently going on. I will say it has a 3 or 4 week learning curve, but once you figure it out, it is awesome.
If you aren’t going after the right keywords, you have already lost!
Wow Eric!
You said something that is sooo true…Going after keywords that no longer have any traffic to them. I’ll tell you what…the cool part about people leaving comments…I learn from them!
Thanks for stopping by and Have a great weekend!
Josh
Hi everybody,
I also use The Google Keyword Tool, but lately i accessed the professional side of keyword research tools market, with iSpionage and Keywordspy. I am anxious to see what these can do as most people make a buzz about paid tools.
Cheers!
Hi Dave,
Thanks for stopping by! I heard a lot about paid tools. But gotta love free tools to get a job done.
Have a great weekend…
Josh
