What Online Marketers Ought to Know About Having a Mentor

by Josh Garcia on July 12, 2010

having a mentor

Are you building your online business by yourself or do you have a mentor to help you?

With so many individuals jumping online today to jump start their online marketing business. It makes you wonder are they going at it solo or do they have mentors in their lives to help them out.

When I started my online marketing business I was pounding it solo. Nothing was happening. I wasn’t receiving any traffic. I was reading everything I can get my hands on. Many times I would apply what was being mentioned on post, articles, and videos. Only wishing if someone was able to walk me through the process. There were times, the work that I was doing felt like it was time wasted.

Sadly the internet is full gadgets and schemes telling you that you can make money online and generate tons of traffic. The truth is you must be careful with what you are getting into since some of those schemes will just suck up your money.

I must admit that everything started taking off when I put mentors in my live.

Mentoring is nothing more than having a relationship with someone who is an expert in their field. A mentor will share their experiences they have gained. They will help you strengthen your learning curve and leadership skills. But most importantly a mentor will hold you accountable to your goals.

There are components that you want to look for in a mentor:

  • Are they knowledgeable in their field?
  • Are they honest when providing advice
  • Are they looking for your best interest?
  • Are they a good communicator?
  • Are they committed in building a strong relationship?

Learning from a good mentor will take your online marketing business to another level. Bottom line you want to get results today. With so much information out there you can easily get lost or worst…Paralyzed!

By having the guidance of a mentor. You’ll receive the right direction so you can get to your goals a bit faster than trying to do it solo. Do you want to see results today or next year?

Motivation is the number one reason you see so many individuals get started with online marketing and then 6-12 months later you’ll no longer hear from them. By having a mentor to keep you inspired and motivated you’ll be able to go through the ups and down that goes along with this business.

Here is a little secret when selecting a mentor. Look for one that will have the time to speak to you.

If you are building your business solo and wondering why nothing is happening. You might want to start thinking about having a mentor in your life to allow your business move to the next level.

You are absolutely right Josh, and you can have more than one mentor.

You can have mentors who you have never met but you follow their teachings.

But nothing beats having a personal mentor, someone who can guide you and provide encouragement when needed.

Hi Josh,

Adopting a mentor is a time saver. You can learn from their mistakes so you don’t have to make them. A mentor can also tell you what works, what doesn’t and how you should go about setting up your day.

Along with having a mentor it’s important to move into directed action on a daily basis. A mentor can help you in the motivating department but the action part is always on you.

Thanks for sharing your insight,

Hi Ryan,

Having a mentor when it comes to online marketing is very important to have. Accountability, Motivation, and inspiration all comes from a mentor. If you are not taking action, that is a slap to the mentor and you’ll have a good chance of losing that individual that is there to help you succeed.

Have a good day, Champ!

Hey Josh,

You make some very valid points. The internet can be a vortex that can suck you in if not careful.

A mentor can come in many forms, but it’s best to have one to work with personally.

Have an awesome day!

I agree Josh that having a personal mentor is the ideal situation, but not always possible, so it is important to find successful people to follow. It can be difficult to keep motivated by yourself but if you are determined and look for inspiration in the right places it is possible.

Hi Josh,

Great article, as always! Probably the most important thing you mentioned above is this…”Here is a little secret when selecting a mentor. Look for one that will have the time to speak to you.” You need to be able to connect with your mentor (or sponsor for that matter) one on one.

Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Learning form others makes absolute sense and cuts down our learning curve. Having a variety of mentors in different areas is probably best. Becoming a mentor is also something that has huge value for us to do. To give service unconditionally is what gives us a purpose that goes far beyond making money. Thanks Josh.

Hey Josh,

Having a mentor makes the world of difference. I’ll never forget when I started with this. It was so hard because I got pushed beyond my limits. However, I was so grateful for it that it has helped shape what to do versus what not to do.

Thanks Josh for this perspective.

When you can teach others what not to do from your experience. You just shorten the learning curve for them. But the one key that I keep going back to in having a mentor. Is the accountability.

I liked this post because it told my story. I can relate to what you are saying bro. It is totally different to have someone along with you then to try to get ‘er don’ by yourself. It can be very difficult to stay focused when it seems nothing is working. Thank you for your post Josh, and I look to reading more.

Hi Josh,
great post. Mentoring is crucial. We don’t become old enough in order for us to make all the mistakes on our own. So it’s very helpful to fall back on folks that were so kind to make their mistakes for us. They’re called mentors. I would draw a fine line to a coach: A coach usually gets paid and doesn’t necessarily talk from his or her own experience. He or she usually can’t afford to do it for free. A mentor doesn’t want your money because he doesn’t need it, he wants your comittment. A mentor walked the talk.
Cheers

Josh,

Mentoring has got to be up there as one of the top, most important things that a business owner can do to move things along. You don’ always have to have a mentor that is in front of you either.

I have used historical people, as well as seminars and books on tape as mentors. They cn be found everywhere, but it’s very critical to learn from the mistakes of others so that we don’t make them ourselves.

“Are they honest with providing advice?” I like this question.. There are many so called mentors that do everything else you mentioned but not honestly.. Some people are afraid that if they share their true experience and things that really work, they might be jumped over by their pupil- thats called jealousy.. Give to receive, simple as that..

For being honest with my leads and team members I was rewarded with their trust and thats the goal all marketers strive to reach.

Fantastic post Josh!
