Leadership Skills

If you want to run a successful online business there is one leadership skill you must adopt…Self Discipline.

As an online marketer, you will always be seeing the next big software that is going to make everything easier and effortless.

It is important to constantly learn and sharpen your online skills. However, it is not wise to purchase everything that is coming out when you haven’t even learned what you purchased yesterday.

When individuals do this it is an easy way to get overwhelmed and accomplish nothing.

Ultimately what happens you’ll be inconsistent with the work that needs to be accomplish.

Why Self Discipline

When you get started with your online marketing business is a must to be self discipline. This leadership skill is vital simply because you don’t have anyone telling you what to do like a boss. You must tell yourself what to do.

Therefore, it is important to be consistent with your work habits to build your business.

Let me share with you ways I stay focus and on track:

- It is important that at the end of the day you must write down 3 – 5 activities you must get done the next business day. This is very important!

- Be discipline with your time. Set a time limit for every activity you must get done. For example: I like to spend 30 minutes on Facebook marketing, 15 minutes on Twitter marketing, and 1.5 hours on my blog.

- Take small bite size when working on a project. The goal isn’t to complete a project in one day. If you do this, you’ll neglect your daily activities.

- Take breaks in between. It’s important not to burn yourself out. I like to listen to an educational MP3 or CD’s. I as well, will pick up a book and read it for 10 minutes through out the day. This secret will change your business around.

Is There More

I can go on and on with tips on how to apply this leadership skill into your online business. There are several ways you can keep yourself disciplined when running your business.

Understand that everyone has different ways to keep themselves focus. I just wanted to share some with you so you can start building your own discipline towards your future.

If you spend just a little time handling your task on a daily basis before you know it you’ll see your business growing quickly.

Come up with a plan that works for you and stay consistent. This will allow you to develop your self discipline skills for a successful business.

Josh,

Discipline is so critical in small business. I really likes your suggestion of taking the social media outlets and dividing up your time wisely. 30 min to facebook etc. This way you don’t get stuck in the total suck-hole of time that some of those activities can be and leave more time to working on your business and allowing it to grow.

Hi Joshua,

It is so important to only allow yourself a certain time limit. You and I know how easy it is to get lost in Social Media sites. When you dedicate only a certain time frame to accomplish a task so you can move on to the next task. That is how you’ll be able to grow your business.

Have an awesome day!

Hi Josh,

I adopt a similar strategy. I takes breaks on the hour for about 5 – 10 minutes. I might go for a little stroll or perform some affirmations, or do a little reading.

Make some modifications here and there but stick to your basic strategy. This makes being disciplined a habit.

Thanks for sharing your insight :)

Josh,

I definitely agree with you. Self discipline or self mastery as I like to call it is a crucial skill that one must develop if they want to be successful in business.

Being your own boss gives you the freedom to enjoy life but you must also be able to discipline yourself to work when it’s time to work.

Sometimes people will do more work for their boss than they will for their own business. If we are going to work hard for anyone, it should be ourselves.

Josh,

Great advice especially coming from a leader like yourself.
People think it is easy to discipline themselves but
fall off track and put it off. They will start a book and
never finish, create a blog but never add new content.

Your time management can greatly improve your
discipline. I believe that, I am able to read when I am
commuting on public transportation. This is the time
I could be taking a nap but instead I am disciplined enough
to use the time to get things done.

Hey Josh,
You hit on a very big topic. Being disciplined and taking consistent action will ensure that you are always moving your business forward. For me personally, give me someone who consistently does something 1hr everyday over someone who comes out working 8 hrs / day and then doesn’t do anything after a couple of weeks.

Great stuff,
Eric

Hi Eric,

The only way to move a business forward is by taking consistent action everyday. Not missing a beat is very important. Just like the body. Every beat the heart puts out there is very important to stay consistent. The moment it skips a beat, issue will arise from it.

Jennifer June 4, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Thank you for this.
I am a newbie and honestly, I didn’t know you were “allowed” to stop, even for a minute. I go from 9am till midnight, figuring this out, fixing that, and I didn’t know when to fit in personal growth time, let alone to read all the books I’ve been told to read or to watch the videos and trainings.
It seems like if you want to succeed quickly, you need to get all this done, like yesterday!
All I have heard is that if you have your own home business, and you want success, be prepared to sacrifice 2 years of your life–if you want your dreams to come true.
But it’s nice to know that you are supposed to have down time.
And you can have a life and breathe.
Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,

If you like to work from 9am – midnight. It is best that you take little breaks and listen to something inspirational or read a personal growth book. This will allow you grow inside. If you ignore personal growth you are basically starving yourself. Keep that dream alive!

Love the post Josh. You bring out some excellent tips. I agree with you on writing down your tasks before you go to bed. You should never begin a day that you haven’t already finished. Another thing to keep you on track is at the end of the day, write down what you actually accomplished.
10 pages of a good book and 15 minutes of good listening material everyday. I also think exercise is important. I do P90X. Balance is not only the key to life, it’s the key to success!

Hey Josh,

Another great post!

I like to schedule between 9am-11am for my money making activities. After that I allow myself to answer emails, do research on how to improve my systems, implement new tools, etc.

Before that I was all over the place and inconsistent-consequently so were my results.

Once I learned how to put blinders on and commit 100% focus on the activities that get me results, that is when I finally started to see the success of my efforts.

Thanks Again!
