The Lazy Blogger’s Way to Understand Copywriting Basics…

Copywriting Basics

Do you think about your written work and wonder if it is effective?

Are you like me constantly looking to fine tune your copywriting skills?

When you get a grasp of copywriting you can apply that to your articles, email marketing campaigns, or social media marketing.

Your copy is what your readers are going to read to solve an issue or learn something so they can apply it to better their themselves.

I’m going to share with you my outline that I like to keep whenever I write an article to make it as effective as possible.

5 Questions to ask yourself before you hit the send or publish button to make sure your copywriting is effective.

1. Let me give it one more look - Before you submit it so the world can see it. Did you do a last quick overview of your copy? Make sure your spelling and grammar is checked. I understand that you and I are not perfect. But overlooking your work to check for the basics is important.

Does your web linking working and have a keyword in the title? Do all your images have keywords in the Alt text? Just make sure that the basics are cover when looking over your material.

2. Is your message targeting the right audience - This is a big one! Most marketers overlook this and just write for themselves without the target audience in mind. When you are writing make sure it spells out the benefits that your target market is having an issue with.

3. Does your message have a call to Action - Are you providing your target audience a call to action? The goal here is to make sure your target audience knows what action to take next. Is it to sign up for your subscription or to attend a function? Make sure you spell it out what you want them to do next.

4.Please keep it short  - If you are writing an article post, “Do you know that your readers will remember your message when you keep it short?” If your article post is longer than 800 words you need to be a master copywriter to keep your audience in tune. Other wise you are going to lose them!

5. Get good at saying it over again - Most likely your target audience needs to see a message more than 3 times to really make the point. So if you are selling something make sure to ask for the sale several times. If you are providing ‘How To’ information put it in a list format.

Getting in the habit to write effective copywriting one must practice daily. The more comfortable you get with your copywriting the easier it will become. Understand that if you follow these 5 guidelines is a start to getting your message to your target audience.

To Your Success,

Hey Josh,

I didn’t realize how much I liked lists till I started seeing them in blogs… you have a great point there. It makes things easier to remember.

All of these are right on target. I don’t always repeat myself, as I sometimes have a hard time keeping it short! ;)

Make it a good one!

This is a good post. I was just reading a tip on articles to keep them short then have that point back to an more informative version maybe on your blog or some other website. You are correct peoples boredom levels are sorely low so it’s best to be brief and informative.

Josh,

Checking it twice is very important to see if you can improve the marketing piece, but more important that than is getting them to take action, SO i totally agree that having a call to action is crucial to writing an effective marketing piece.

Hi Josh,

I’ve adopted the shorter is better copywriting policy recently. We like to absorb information in short, powerful bursts so that’s how you should cater to your audience. This way we can put the knowledge into use more quickly.

Great tip with the alt tags. I will keep it in mind.

Thanks for sharing your insight :)

When writing a post on a blog you want to keep it shorter. Now, if you are writing a sales page then that is different.

A lot of people forget about the alt tags. ;)

Hey Josh

List is a great way to make yourself referable. People generally remember list and will say go check out Josh’s list on….

Going over your copy one more time is vital. I re-read the whole article in edit and preview mood many times (and mistakes still get through).

Good check list buddy

A really good, old-school copywriting trick is to read your sales letter out loud (to yourself or anyone that wants to listen) before you put it out there. This will help you catch “speed bumps” in your copy where the reader might get hung up or get bored.

A sale is a fragile thing and if you have any little places in your copy where the reader might lose momentum, you could lose the sale as well.

Hey Josh,

I usually write a post, and then get Tragena to read over it before I submit. I tend to get technical. She helps me cut out the techie stuff, that I find very interesting, and stick to the more readable content that the majority of the world wants.

When I write a sales letter I have a strict technique. I take every paragraph and paste it in word. I read it as a stand alone paragraph and make sure that no matter where the reader scans down to, every paragraph makes my point in some way.
