How Learning Copywriting Made Me Connect With My Audience

by Josh Garcia on August 30, 2010

Copywriting

Are you driving your audience away? or pulling them in with copywriting?

If you remember, I wrote on Friday about identifying your target audience.

Let’s expand a little bit more on how to really connect with your audience.

If you recall I mentioned, one of the biggest mistakes individuals make. They run their blog as a hobby.

Here is a question I have for you, “How much are you writing about what interests you, rather than what interests your targeted audience?”

I did not understand this in the beginning, so don’t feel bad…

Do you realize what matters to me may not matter to you

When I first started studying this information it really made me think. Why is it that some folks are better at connecting with their audience versus other individuals.

The missing link…

It all boils down to knowing your audience and learning the basic foundation of copywriting. By studying the basics of copywriting it will allow you to connect with your target audience.

When you start addressing the problems. Not only are they going to rave about you. They are going to SPREAD the word about you.

On Friday, I gave you some questions you should be asking.

Well, I pulled out my book, “The Ultimate Sales Letter” and check these questions you should know about your audience:

  • What keeps them awake at night?
  • What is it that they are afraid of?
  • What is it that they are angry about?
  • Who are they angry at?

There are a more questions. But this gives you a better understanding about how detail you should know about your target audience.

The more I learned about copywriting. I was able to refine my target audience even more because of what I was learning.

Here is what you want to be able to know about your audience:

  • Where they hang out?
  • What do they like to read?
  • What do they like to study?
  • What sites or blogs do they visit?

By understanding your audience, it will allow you to connect with them. Not to mention, you’ll be become a respected, professional in your niche.

If you have time, here is an article I want to share with you that was interesting.

Hey Josh,

One thing that I’ve found that works really well along with knowing your audience is writing like you are talking TO them instead of AT them.

Too many times people just are writing without appealing to the audience in a conversational tone. Write like you’re talking to your best friend, because that’ exactly what you want your audience to be.

Hi Mike,

When speaking to your audience it is important that you speak to them in a conversational tone. That is how you will be able to connect with them. Great comment!

Always great info. I always talk like I’m in a consultation room with a patient. I give it straight up, no hype, no bull and give it like it is, just like I’m typing to a person I’m talking to. Thanks for the great reminders!

Hi Josh,

very interesting question:”“How much are you writing about what interests you, rather than what interests your targeted audience?” The ideal fit is that it appeals to either party because if I write what interests me, I might be more authentic. At the end, it’s about being a best-seller and not a best-writer.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Take care

One of the most effective ways of connecting with customers is the skill of talking to them rather than talking AT them. This is IMO the essence of copywriting and should be essential to blogging.

This is really a helpful post for me. I remember the first intro to marketing that I had, it was a talk by Derek Gehl, and he said that the key to successful marketing is to show benefits not features of your product. As I start to blog your post is so on target and I can’t wait to see what I come up with after this reminder. Thank you!

That’s another reason why it’s good to focus more on niche markets. It’s a lot easier to get a grasp of who your audience is and what they’re looking for meaning you’ll appeal to more of your visitors.

Learning some of the copywriting basics will help a blogger keep readers engaged and wanting to read more because it can help you write in a way that speaks to them on a core emotional level.
