If you are reading this, most likely you provide some sort of content marketing to an audience.
The most common ways of delivering content is blogging, video, email marketing, or ebook.
The whole purpose of delivering your content is to educate individuals on topics which they are having an issue with.
After all, some of your content will be used for lead generation or converting a prospect into a consumer.
There is one point I do want to make, individuals are looking for information to solve their problems. If you are able to deliver a solution it builds trust, credibility, and authority.
Since it is important that you deliver quality content within your content marketing strategy. Sometimes I see mistakes that are way too often in content marketing.
Let me share with you, the 5 most common content marketing mistakes
1. Ignoring your audience needs –
This has to be the number one mistake a lot of individuals make. Ignoring what your audience is looking for and not providing solutions.
When you are able to identify problems and able to connect with people. It becomes a lot easier to generate leads or sell products/services.
2. Not providing updated fresh content -
When you are not providing updated fresh content you are losing your dedicated audience and possibly consumers. Your audience will begin to explore other sites/blogs where they can get similar information.
3. Neglecting or forgetting SEO -
For some reason, individuals neglect this important part of their content marketing when blogging. You don’t have to be an SEO wizard to benefit from it. As long as you take some time to study keywords and its density it will help you with search engine rankings.
4. Content is not focus driven -
This is a huge drawback in content marketing. If your content is not focus and it is all over the place. Your readers are not going to be able to receive the information and be turned off. This is an easy way to lose a potential lead or prospect.
5. Thinking online tools replaces good quality content -
This is a mistake desperate individuals make. They start spending money on all kinds of black hat SEO tricks. When they should be focusing on creating good high quality content. Black hat SEO tricks work temporary not long term.
Understand that content marketing is about you being able to create unique content that your audience is going to learn from. With you delivering valuable content you will generate leads and have conversion.

Josh, another content marketing mistake is not being consistent in updating the content. Updating on a frequent basis creates a loyal and returning visitors.
Hi Andreas,
That is a great point! It does create loyal visitors. Thanks for mentioning that.
Hey Josh,
I have been guilty of the first 4 at one time or another… Once I started really applying myself, and getting better at those not only did my opt in rate drastically increase, but my bounce rate has dropped way down from what it used to be.
I hope people really take to heart what you’re saying. It’s always a work in progress, but the key is to always be progressing.
Thanks for another great post!
Susanna
Hi Susanna,
What stands out here…By applying you were able to increase opt-in & lower your bounce rate. Congrats!
Thanks Josh, I am just getting started in blogging and it is taking me a while to learn but your post made more sense to me today than ever. I have been hearing this often and quite frankly I have trouble getting to post BUT you have made it perfectly clear today that I better find the time to do this or it will be over for me. Thanks again Josh…..I will get on it NOW!
Hi Donna,
That is the best action to take…NOW!
Yep, count me guilty on a couple of those points! One thing I’ve absolutely learned is the value of providing fresh content on a regular basis.
Keep pumping out the content on a regular schedule and you’ll see more people interested in what you have to say.
Good stuff as always, Josh!

It is important to be reminded of the basics. After all, it is the basics that builds up the foundation.
Josh,
Great post – this is a good list of things to avoid when getting into content marketing.. Unique content is what gets people hung up – and so they resort to ‘ARTICLE SPINNERS’ and PLR articles..
but as we know, there’s nothing like good quality & unique content..

great that you clarify that the best SEO tricks won’t replace great content. Mediocre content, SEO optimized – a no-go area.

And like many of the brave souls above, I too admit to making a few of those mistakes.
To deliver good content you need to know who your audience is. If you don’t then you will start to make some of those mistakes.
.-= Peter Fuller MBA´s last blog ..The Law of Awareness – A Personal Story =-.
Hi Peter,
We all made those mistakes at one point. The key is not to continue making them.
Hi Josh,
Great tips you’re outlined here. I have to agree with Susanna on the first four points (many of us are guilty of these points).
Most of the time, this seems to emanate from not doing enough research to determine EXACTLY what your audience is interested in. Forums are great for this, but sometimes, we just miss this step. When we miss this, we write based on what we THINK they may like. This of course, will lead to lack of content, as we will no doubt eventually run out of things to write about.
I think one must just get in place a system they use to crank out content. Stick with this, and make sure it’s customer-focussed and you should go right.
Thanks for sharing.
Michael
Hi Michael,
You just mentioned a great place to know what people are looking for…Forums!
Hey Josh,
The more I read posts like yours the better my blogs get. I do have to check myself though. Number 2 is what I’m guilty of as well as many of us. But other than that these are a great blueprint to follow when creating a great blog.
Sherman
Hi Sherman,
It is a learning process for everyone, including myself. As long as we don’t think that we know it all and we have more room for improvement. Everything will be just fine!
Hi Josh,
Great list. Re: Number 4, I’ve found that it’s much easier to transmit value in an article that has one essential point to it. Otherwise it’s difficult to know what message one is supposed to take away from the post. So focus is truly essential
Of course, at the end of the day, it’s just really important to produce quality content. If people enjoy reading it, and learn something relevant, they will participate and come back

Hi Josh,
I liked your post and found it so true. For me, the biggest secret I have discovered is that when I’m writing and posting frequently my content is better. I’m always striving to do better than I did the day before and luckily with a blog there are so many ways to know that the content is good, appeals to my audience, and is attracting new visitors through SEO. It’s a steady journey of putting one foot in front of the other and implementing the new tips and techniques I learn along the way.

One of the signatures of bad content is lack of value. Nothing the reader can actually use to better their business in any way – I am amazed time and time again how many bloggers do that.

Great points Josh! I think a reason these mistakes are so common is because some people rush through writing posts. It becomes an activity to tick off on a list. Creating posts that are unique and valuable takes time and should be afforded the time they require.

Hi Marcus,
What you are saying is so true. Creating a unique post does take time.
Hey Josh,
I beleive that we all have fell victim to one or more of these blunders that either stalled our business, I agree that you have to keep the content relevant and fresh. In todays digital age, we are on a information binge that does not seem that it is going to slow down anytime soon. With Search Engines ranking new and updated but relevant content higher we all have to keep this in mind, while some things like wine, cheese or a classic movie are great age, most content is not …….. Thank you for the great reminders…..
Hi Robert,
That is great what you said.
Josh,
Guilty, guilty, guilty and I am sure I have broken a few more commandments. Why even attempt to blog and put all the work into it if no one is going to read it.
We have a responsibility to figure out who our target audience is and speak to them in all our post. What a waste of time to do otherwise.
