What Everybody Ought to Know About DoFollow Blogs

by Josh Garcia on July 26, 2010

DoFollow Blog

If you own a blog, I’m not sure if you took the time to study NoFollow blogs vs. DoFollow blogs.

Here is an email I received over the weekend:

Mark ask:

I’m starting to see a lot discussion on NoFollow and DoFollow blogs. I notice your blog is a DoFollow blog. Can you please explain the difference?

That is a great question. In the last couple months I’ve been studying the difference and the benefits of having a DoFollow blog. Once I discuss the difference I think you’ll agree that having a DoFollow blog does make sense. Plus it goes in line with today’s social networking web 2.0.

What is the difference between DoFollow and NoFollow Blogs?

If you are using a WordPress platform by default it is a NoFollow blog. The only time this attribute comes into play is when someone is leaving a comment. The NoFollow attribute tells the search engines NOT to follow the link that is left with that comment.

In other words, you don’t get any link juice from that blog after leaving a comment.

Here is the reason why WordPress set it to NoFollow when someone is leaving a comment:

  1. It’s good SEO for the blog since it will have less link bleed, which will give you a better page rank. OK…that sounds good to me!
  2. To avoid blog spammers from receiving link juice to their sites. By having NoFollow will prevent them from commenting on your blog. OK…another valid point!

Why go with DoFollow blogs

If you own a blog, I’m sure you get enjoyment by having readers leaving you a comment after reading or watching your awesome work. Not to mention it creates a social community and builds friendship on your piece of real estate.

Now if you are like me, you like to encourage people to leave a comment on your blog. Here is what I’m about to say. When you leave a comment on a DoFollow blog you will gain a link from that blog because the search engines will follow the link back to your blog.

Do remember that when you are on a DoFollow blog make sure you leave quality comments.

Using a DoFollow attribute is a win/win situation for the reader and blogger. I use to just leave comments on any blog. Now, I search for DoFollow blogs that are in the same niche and have traffic flow. This will allow me to leave a nice comment, generate traffic, and gain a backlink.

I know what you are thinking…What about spamming comments?

Spammers will always be trying to do what they are good at….Spamming. I was receiving spam comments before I made my blog DoFollow. Now, I placed spamming plugins to prevent spam comments.

  1. Askimet
  2. Si Captcha Anti-Spam

By having both of these plugins my spam comments has decrease dramatically. However, you still have to monitor your comments.

You are probably wondering how do I make my blog DoFollow

If you see the benefits of rewarding your commentators you can turn off NoFollow tag in wordpress. WordPress doesn’t have an option where you can just turn it off. You’ll need to install a plugin to remove the NoFollow attribute.

You can do a search for ‘Do Follow’ plugin. Simply install it and activate it. This will remove the NoFollow attribute in the comment section.

I bet having a DoFollow vs. NoFollow discussion will continue. But I don’t see why not have a DoFollow blog when you can install plugins to prevent spam comments.

My attitude is if you are going to spend time commenting on other blogs. Why not use the time wisely and comment on high traffic blogs that have DoFollow attribute so you can gain a backlink and traffic from it.

So feel free to let me know what you think about DoFollow vs. NoFollow attribute. I can guarantee you that the minimum you’ll receive a backlink and maybe some traffic back to your blog.

Thank you Josh for another great post!

I have been wondering the same thing for quite some time now and have not been sure what to do in terms of follow vs. nofollow links. Your post has helped move that discussion along.

I am still not sure what I am going to do yet, but I am leaning more and more towards the follow links.

Thanks again for the post.

Hi Michael,

As long as you have the proper plugins to prevent spamming comments…You are safe! I do this so I can give back to those that visit my blog everyday and comment on it. The minimum that I can do is give you a backlink from this blog.

Have a great day!

I’m glad that now you know. The question is are you going to make your blog a DoFollow or keep it as a NoFollow blog?

Thank you Josh, no I didn’t know that you had to have a plugin to turn off
the no follow. Would this take away the monitor facility if we didn’t use a
spam plugin.

Hi Rachel,

To turn it off you’ll need to install a ‘Do Follow’ plugin. You want to have spam plugin intalled. If you don’t you will receive tons of spam comments. The 2 plugins that I mentioned will be enough. Hope that answers your question.

Have a great day!

Yes that does make sense, I just wondered as some good comments get put into spam, but this can be checked I suppose. But I do want to reward the good comments, thanks.

There’s a plugin that I use on my WP blog by the name of Meta SEO Pack which allows you to selectively add follow or nofollow tags to each post or page. I find this particularly useful since you can also add keywords and page description to optimize each page/post. Excellent post Josh.

People need to realize that they are going to receive spam comments whether it is a ‘NoFollow’ or ‘DoFollow’. However, DoFollow is just a great way to reward those that take the time to read/watch and comment.

Hey Josh

I recommend the ComLuv plugin which you have because it uses links without the nofollow tag.

In the end if you want commenters you need to reward them with a dofollow link.

When I first came across this some months ago it took me a while to get clear information so I am sure you will have solved this problem for a lot of people.

Great explanation on the difference, Josh.

The only thing I’d like to add to the discussion is the fact that some commenting systems (like Disqus) will make all your comments NoFollow by default without giving you a chance to choose. So for those of us who have DoFollow blogs that’s obviously not a good way to go.

Thanks for the quality of the info.

A dofollow blog is no problem if the blog owner closely monitors commentor URLs and ensures that there are no links to foul sites going out.

Hi Josh,

it definitely makes sense to have a “Do Follow”-blog, especially if you embrace the idea of your blog being your hub for your social media presence. You are right that spammers are going to always find a way to spam their stuff. So we need to protect ourselves and our ethical readers from them with suitable tools.

Thanks for sharing.

Josh,

I had no idea that most WordPress blogs were automatically nofollow in the comment section. That explains a lot from some of the baklinks that I thought I created, but never showed up. It must have been the blog owner.

Well, I know that I am with you. I think that it’s important to reward the people that have taken the time to make comments. I am going to become a Do-Follow blog myself. I already use CommentLove and I think that is a great reward tool as well.

I see that you are using Disqus as a commenting platform. Disqus is a nofollow platform and I don’t think by you installing ‘do follow’ plugin will overwrite it. You might want to check out different forums to see if there is a way to overwrite the nofollow attribute on Disqus. Maybe, someone can add a comment to this if there is a way around it.

Nice read Josh!!

This helps newbies a lot. Rewarding your reader with a link love will prompt them to come back to your blog.
As you said the most important point to be stressed, if you leave a comment on these Dofollow blogs, is to leave quality comments.

Reply

Josh Garcia July 28, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Hi Sandeep,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

That is why I love dofollow blogs. It rewards the individuals leaving a comment and the blog owner gets readers to come back to leave comments for backlinks. Now, it is important to leave a good quality comment. I’ve delete comments because it is clearly that they are looking for a backlink.
