What Everybody Ought to Know About DoFollow Blogs

DoFollow Blog

If you own a blog, I’m not sure if you took the time to study NoFollow blogs vs. DoFollow blogs.

Here is an email I received over the weekend:

Mark ask:

I’m starting to see a lot discussion on NoFollow and DoFollow blogs. I notice your blog is a DoFollow blog. Can you please explain the difference?

That is a great question. In the last couple months I’ve been studying the difference and the benefits of having a DoFollow blog. Once I discuss the difference I think you’ll agree that having a DoFollow blog does make sense. Plus it goes in line with today’s social networking web 2.0.

What is the difference between DoFollow and NoFollow Blogs?

If you are using a WordPress platform by default it is a NoFollow blog. The only time this attribute comes into play is when someone is leaving a comment. The NoFollow attribute tells the search engines NOT to follow the link that is left with that comment.

In other words, you don’t get any link juice from that blog after leaving a comment.

Here is the reason why WordPress set it to NoFollow when someone is leaving a comment:

  1. It’s good SEO for the blog since it will have less link bleed, which will give you a better page rank. OK…that sounds good to me!
  2. To avoid blog spammers from receiving link juice to their sites. By having NoFollow will prevent them from commenting on your blog. OK…another valid point!

Why go with DoFollow blogs

If you own a blog, I’m sure you get enjoyment by having readers leaving you a comment after reading or watching your awesome work. Not to mention it creates a social community and builds friendship on your piece of real estate.

Now if you are like me, you like to encourage people to leave a comment on your blog. Here is what I’m about to say. When you leave a comment on a DoFollow blog you will gain a link from that blog because the search engines will follow the link back to your blog.

Do remember that when you are on a DoFollow blog make sure you leave quality comments.

Using a DoFollow attribute is a win/win situation for the reader and blogger. I use to just leave comments on any blog. Now, I search for DoFollow blogs that are in the same niche and have traffic flow. This will allow me to leave a nice comment, generate traffic, and gain a backlink.

I know what you are thinking…What about spamming comments?

Spammers will always be trying to do what they are good at….Spamming. I was receiving spam comments before I made my blog DoFollow. Now, I placed spamming plugins to prevent spam comments.

  1. Askimet
  2. Si Captcha Anti-Spam

By having both of these plugins my spam comments has decrease dramatically. However, you still have to monitor your comments.

You are probably wondering how do I make my blog DoFollow

If you see the benefits of rewarding your commentators you can turn off NoFollow tag in wordpress. WordPress doesn’t have an option where you can just turn it off. You’ll need to install a plugin to remove the NoFollow attribute.

You can do a search for ‘Do Follow’ plugin. Simply install it and activate it. This will remove the NoFollow attribute in the comment section.

I bet having a DoFollow vs. NoFollow discussion will continue. But I don’t see why not have a DoFollow blog when you can install plugins to prevent spam comments.

My attitude is if you are going to spend time commenting on other blogs. Why not use the time wisely and comment on high traffic blogs that have DoFollow attribute so you can gain a backlink and traffic from it.

So feel free to let me know what you think about DoFollow vs. NoFollow attribute. I can guarantee you that the minimum you’ll receive a backlink and maybe some traffic back to your blog.

This was a very comprehensive post Josh! Excellent work!

I fully agree with you, having your blog as DoFollow is definitely the way to go. This, as you mentioned, creates a win-win atmosphere for both the blogger and reader.

The blogger influences a great community of frequent visitors and he/she pleases their visitors by providing a backlink to the commenter’s site.

I do see a lot of spamming on DoFollow blogs and this because people are just trying to build the number of back links in little time as possible. But if you are using anti-spamming software like you mentioned, then this shouldn’t be a problem.

I love to leave quality comments, as this means that you learn something from the post/article, and making a contribution to other visitors who may benefit from your knowledge is a awesome bonus too.

Keep up the great work Josh, your blog here is very nice and organised, I like it!

Hi Josh,

That is important to leave nice comments on dofollow blogs. You don’t want to just say, “Great Job!” and that’s it for a backlink. I delete them and move on.

Have a wonderful day!

I have implemented both plugins and look forward to more genuine comments. Now to go and find dofollow blogs to comment on!

Thanks again Josh

Hi Rachel,

That is great you are going the route of dofollow blogs. Just have to make sure you have the anti-spam plugins installed.

Have a great day!

I agree with your analysis. Social networking is a two-way street.

Meanwhile, I would add one argument: if you are going to moderate your blog (i.e. approve each and every posts), why not just make your blog DoFollow?

Great post! Thank you.

Hi Andre,

Not sure if you know how to tell if a blog is a nofollow or dofollow blog? If you check out this post I show you how you can check if it is a dofollow blog. BTW…This blog is a dofollow blog.

Have a great day!

You’ve just officially convinced me to become dofollow. I was leaning that way before, but now I see there is nothing but potential gain for my blog.

BTW, I also get SPAM comments even with Nofollow, Akismet, and WP Spamfree. Every now and then a SPAM comment gets through into my “moderate” queue, but they never seem to publish without me approving them, so we’ll see what happens. I look at it this way, the potential reward of new and possibly-interested visitors is probably worth sifting through some SPAM, at least that’s true in my case. Everyone else will have to decide for themselves.

Hi Melissa,

Congrats on making your blog a dofollow! The spam comments are going to come in regardless. However, it sure does help having the spam plugins. :)

Have a great day!

Hi Josh!

I was so impressed with your blog posts on this topic. You taught me something I didn’t know. I’m happy to be a DoFollow blog now and I’ve created a DoFollow badge for people to display on their blog to encourage comments and let their readers know they’ll be rewarded with a backlink. Several color variations are available to match most blog designs.

Thanks for the great information!

Hey Josh, thank you for this amazing tip and detailed explanation. The thing is we gotta use every single thing on the net and get the most from it, including commenting.

I agree, if there’s a way to prevent spam, there’s no reason not to make blogs Do Follow.

Thank you for this article,

Milena

Hi Milena,

People don’t realize that spam comments are going to try to get through whether you have a dofollow or nofollow blog.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for bringing this important information to our attention.
I knew the terms DoFollow and NoFollow, but wasn’t aware my own blog was NoFollow…! :-(
Of course I uploaded and activated the DoFollow plugin immediately, so my blog is a DoFollow too right now! :-)

Thank you, I learned something new today!

One issue with Dofollow is ofcourse, human-made spam comments. They are hard to filter out with plugins like Akismet, as opposed to automated spams. They are comments that do not contribute to the discussion like:”Great Post!”. So admins should watch out!

Hi Icechen1,

You are correct! It is hard to get around the human made spam comments. The only way is by monitoring the comments.

Josh – within a short time I have come to value your information. the approach registers with me I can “see” where you are going and it makes sense. I am wondering – what is the best approach to actually search for “do follow blogs” in the chosen niche?
Thanks,
Frieke

Very interesting stuff. I will utilize your information in my blog. I want to make a blog for my auto site and i was confused about the attribute. Which one is good for my auto blog.
After read your post i decide to make a do-follow blog and add comment luv plug in. one more benefit of making do-follow blog is there are very less automotive do-follow blogs. I think this is also a one more good reason for more traffic.

This is an awesome post, Josh. I learned a ton from this post. I’ve installed the “dofollow” plugin according to your recommendation.

This is my first time on your blog and I see the value that you bring to the market place. I look forward to connecting with you and I also look forward to your posts.

Make it a better than fantastic day!
