How To Setup a Blog For Your Business to Flourish

How To Set Up a Blog

Ok…My friends I know someone of you already have this done.

However, lately I have been getting a lot of emails through Facebook from business owners asking what is the best way to promote a product or service using a blog or website.

Allow me to take at least 30 seconds to explain the difference between a blog and a website. This is something that you must know!

Hopefully, when I’m done you’ll be able to distinguish the difference between both and be able to make a decision which one fits your business needs.

What’s a blog?

A blog is a form of a website. A lot of individuals are using blogs to sell products and services. The beauty of a blog it allows the business owner to make a post and connect with their customers by building a readership.

By you being able to write a post about services or events that interest your visitors. The visitors will have the ability to say what they like or don’t like by leaving a comment.

This is powerful because now you are interacting with your visitors.

What is a website?

I will keep this one very short…a site is different because it is static. You can’t have the same interaction with your visitors like a blog.

With a site you are able to describe your products or services but you won’t be able to updated it as easy as a blog. Yes, you can update a site but it is not as easy as updating a blog.

With a blog you can literally update it in 5-15 minutes and displaying for your customers…It’s too easy!

Let’s go and dive into it…

5 reasons why your business should have a blog and not a site:

1. Able to post within minutes – This is probably the biggest reason to have a blog for your business instead of a site. You are able to post articles, videos, and audio literally within 5 minutes.

If you want to do the same with a static site it will take at least 1-3 hours to accomplish the same task. Plus if you are not familiar with website editing that means you are paying someone for it.

So business owners – Time is money! You want your information out to your customers ASAP.

2. Quick to setup - I love this one! You are able to set up your blog in 30 minutes, write or post a video about your business, and hit the cool ‘publish’ button and now your business is online.

3. SEO optimizing is much easier – With a blog it is a lot easier to setup SEO optimizing for the search engines. With a website it takes time for the search engines to index the page.

As soon as you have a post on your blog. You can ‘ping’ the search engines. Basically what you are doing is notifying the search engines that you publish something new and come by to give it a visit so it can index it.

Blogs have the tendency of showing up faster in organic searches.

4. Allows you to build credibility faster - The main reason it allows you to build credibility much faster…the interaction you have. With a static site you have no interaction.

With a blog you can post as often you like and build a relationship with your readers.

5. Again, easy to publish content – This is worth saying it again! With a static site if you want to add something. You have to open up your editor, write a post, update the page before uploading it via FTP, and wait for the search engines to index it.

This is way too slow for an entrepreneur. How about this: Go to the back office of your blog, write a post, and hit publish…Done!

Now you know!

I really hope I was able to answer the questions that I have been getting via email on Facebook. Now, there are many other reasons that I can come up with as to why use a blog vs. static site.

There is a reason why so many major corporations and newspaper companies are going this route. Why not you, who owns a business. Take advantage of it.

If you already own a website then put a link from the site to your new blog. This way you don’t have to kill your website. Just let people know that you have a blog with juicy content or videos.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for breaking down the website/blog debate.

Blogs are more nimble advertising vehicles. They can be updated and you can be chatting with visitors in minutes. You can also customize a blog more quickly than a website.

If you had to choose between the 2 a blog is the way to go.

Hi Ryan,

What some folks don’t know that there are software where you can take a blog platform and design a site just like a static website. So much easier to mess with than trying to create a site the traditional way.

Have a great day!

Josh I was kind of shocked when I read this post. This is the exact conversation I had with a friend of mine wanting to start a cake decorating business. I explained to her that with a blog she could constantly update her products and services as well as make suggestions for certain cakes at certain occasions etc. etc. Another thing I like about this post is you is give some detail into how to update a website. Even with a program like filezilla this can take a awhile. Good show my friend!

Hi Josh;

My husband owns a Remodeling Business and I want to start doing some local internet marketing for his company. I was still not sure if a site or blog would be better, but now I know a blog makes perfect since. He can update any offers, add pictures and he can do it on his own, which makes things so much simpler.
Thanks for explaining the difference between a blog and website :)

Hi Josh,

It’s amazing how many people don’t know the difference between a blog and a website but you have laid them out perfectly. I had a website a couple of years ago and it was the biggest pain in the ass ever. Took to much time to change anything. If I had educated myself about blogging I would still have all my hair!

Thanks for sharing and great post.

Hey Josh,
I knew what was a blog but never knew that it is so easy to set up. Basically
Wordpress gives you a platform to set up and get it designed according to your own needs. And that is great how SEO can be done easily on a blog. I totally agree with you josh blog is much easier and powerful than a static website and it also gives you an opportunity to build relationships with your readers. Have a nice day.

Well explained Josh and a good reminder to me to remember that a lot of people don’t know what the difference is. I sometimes take for granted that everybody knows this.

It is true that Google also loves Worpress blogs because they are continually being updated with relevant fresh material and that is what Google wants.

Hey Josh,

Glad you cleared this one up.

It is possible to have pages on a blog that have the feel of a site, if that is needed. Even to the point of keeping those pages from the regular blog navigation. I’ve done this and it’s a handy little way to share content with only select individuals. ;)

Cheers!

Josh,

Great tips! I have been missing in action over the past week because of converting my material from my retail website to a blog setup.

I have everything a customer needs and more by the time I complete it.

The customer can then access the website to place their secured order linked from the blog.

Great breakdown, I started to advice local businesses in my Chamber of Commerce to do the same.

I love the personal touch that you can have with a blog. Traditional websites don’t have that. And the fact that it puts everything in reverse chronological order, with the latest news/post at the top is a huge bonus, because this rearranging would take ages! They’re just brilliant, if you know what you’re doing, you can literally buy a domain and have a blog setup within 30mins and blogging away!
