Do You Know if Blogging is Right For You?

by Josh Garcia

Having a blog is a great way to communicate with your target audience or customers.

It is easy to provide valuable content via a post, video, or podcast to your readers.

Most blog post are done informal since you are communicating with your audience. What I like about blogs it allows you to penetrate just about any niche market without having all of the experience of HTML or web development.

One of the benefits of owning a blog it allows you to build relationships with individuals you wouldn’t have meet.

I must add that even though it is pretty simple to start a blog. Most don’t realize that it requires maintenance. Because of the maintenance a blog isn’t for everyone. That is why I put this list together so you can determine if having a blog is right for you.

The number of abandoned blog is surprisingly high.

Is Blogging Right For You

  • Blogs are very simple to add content and keep it current
  • Blogs can be used to provide your audience with the latest information
  • You can rank for keyword-rich content for SEO marketing
  • You can update your blog from anywhere there is internet
  • You can brand yourself and establish yourself as an expert in your field
  • You can syndicate your blog with RSS feed allowing a much greater readership

  • You must update your blog constantly: A minimum of 3 times per week
  • You must provide new content to make it worthy for your readers to revisit
  • You have to find time to update your blog most likely on your own personal time
  • Most of the time when updating your blog you can use it towards something more productive
  • Most underestimate the time of updating a blog
  • Generating traffic just doesn’t happen on its own. You have to study generation traffic methods.

By now I’m sure you understand that blogs is a great way to target audience and generate leads for your business. But I like to tell new individuals that are thinking about online marketing for their business that it requires dedication.

Yesterday’s post I wrote about the importance of having a mentor. When developing a blog for business purposes that is when your mentor will help out with setting a plan to succeed.

Hey Josh,

Great tips on figuring out if blogging is right for you. According to your tips the only thing that I’m lacking is that I’m not blogging 3 times a week. Other than that I’m doing great! This would be a great list to check out for those that are interested in blogging. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Sherman,

When you are starting out as a blogger. You must post a minimum of 3 a week. If not, you are not going to drive a constant traffic or loyal readers.

Have a great day!

Eric McMillan July 13, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Seriously, you should put together a FREE report with this info. People would eat it up. Expand it into a 20 page report and you’ll kill it even more than you are now!

You can be an expert and share value and can do SEO on it and let your followers comment ..and that is great medium to build long time value and relations. Thanks for the post.

Hi Yadvinder,

Blogs are easy to set up and maintained but yet so many still abandon their blogs. Blogging is not for everyone.

Have a great day!

Fred Williams July 13, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Nice post Josh,
Blogs are definitely a great way to build way to build your brand and build relationships as well. Right now my goal is to blog 5 days a week I have a good plan for this and so far so good. Once you start building momentum with your blog, things just really get to rolling. The key is that you have to be consistent.

Hi Josh,

Thanks for breaking down the pro’s and con’s of blogging.

Blogging takes significant dedication but the results are worth it. If you aren’t sure whether blogging is for you study awesome blogs like these and get a feel for what blogging is about. It takes time and energy but it’s fun and rewarding to run your own blog.

If you plan to take the online world by storm their is no better or cheaper way to build your brand.

Hi Ryan,

It does take time and planning when running a blog as a business. If you treat the blog like a business it will reward you. If someone treats their blog as a hobby. Then they will get results like a hobby.

Have a great day!

Oliver Tausend July 13, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Hi Josh,
thanks for weighing the pros and cons of blogging. “You need to have a blog.” – That’s obviously not enough as the number of abandoned blogs suggests. But doesn’t need everything in life and business maintenance ? Your family, your finances, your car – whatever.
.-= Oliver Tausend´s last blog ..What Are Your Beliefs About Money A Challenge =-.

Josh Garcia July 14, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Hi Oliver,

Having a blog is important for business owners. However, business owners need to know that a blog does require maintenance and attention. Most folks think that by starting a blog with a couple of content is enough. That is why there are so many neglected blogs online today. The blog owner didn’t take into consideration of the work is required to keep going.

Have a great day!

Ilka Flood July 13, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Geeezzz! Now you tell me.
But on a serious note, great points, Josh! Blogging is definitely work. So I would advice anyone who doesn’t have the time to maintain a blog to not even start one. Because it’s worse to leave a blog abandoned than to not even start one in the first place.

However having a blog and connecting with your audience is priceless!

As always, great stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ilka,

If someone wants to start an online marketing business and doesn’t have a whole lot of time. Blogging is not the answer for them. There are other online methods that can be used to generate leads or a profit. Now, having a blog is a fantastic way to keep in touch with your audience.

Have a great day!

Peter Fuller MBA July 13, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Hey Josh

When I first started my blog it was to allow old friends to find me, that was it.

Now I have decided to get serious so I am going to take your advice seriously.

Hmm, three times a week, okay I am up for it.

Jerome Ratliff July 13, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Hey Josh,

If that’s not one of the latest topic on people’s minds, I’m not sure what is. A lot of people struggle with this and if it’s a viable solution.

I like to look at blogging as another means to build your brand and credibility. Not to mention being able to use for prospecting as well.

Have a good night,

Hey Josh,

This is a really great list, both for bloggers AND those looking into starting one up.

There may not be so many abandoned blogs if people had a better understanding of what they are getting into from the start.

Awesome post!

Joshua Black | The Underdog Millionaire July 14, 2010 at 11:40 am

I think that too many people go into blogging thinking that it can be used as the only vehile to make money. I think blogging is better for keeping up the conversation with your audience and to get them to trust you as a business owner, but not necessarily a great sales tool, because there is so much to get distracted by.

I much prefer to use a blog to generate leads and then use the list to sell more, because then you have a person that is only reading your email and not worrued about the rest of the pretty pictures and links on the blog.

Tristram Lodge July 14, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Hi Josh,

You have made some great pros and cons of having a blog. Yes it is hard work, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. Like everything it takes time, persistance and determination. The pros far out weigh the cons though!.

Hi Tristram,

I think that is the problem. So many think that running a blog for business purposes is simple. After a couple of month, individual realize that it takes time and effort to run one effectively. Now, by having a proper guidance and mentor it will help out!

Have a great day!

Milena July 17, 2010 at 6:16 am

Hey Josh, you gave concrete info about blogging in general.. You are right, if we are not working with our blog constantly, no purpose to have it at all. I know that, since I cant spare much time lately for my blog due to more important business that I am running right now, but I could actually see the results of not being with my blog on a daily basis..

Thanks for sharing this,

Josh Garcia July 19, 2010 at 11:44 am

Hi Milena,

Owning a blog does take ownership. As long as you are doing something productive to move your business forward is all that matters.

Have a great day!
