5 Tips on Overcoming Content Creation Dilemma

by Josh Garcia on July 30, 2010

Content Creation

Creating a blog for business today is simple.

You can purchase a great looking blog template design and sign up with a great hosting company for nominal cost.

However, the dilemma I’m seeing individuals have is staying consistent and coming up with great content to publish. One of the key success to maintaining a blog for a long time is content creation.

I analyze a lot of blogs and speak with a handful of individuals that are starting out their business.

There are two issue that always comes up. I’m going to discuss one of them which is not having the capability of coming up with great content.

Let me share with you 5 tips on overcoming content creation dilemma

1. Are you reading? -  This is always the first question I’ll ask them. If they answer no, right away I know that is the breakdown. I’m not just talking about reading other blogs. I’m talking about reading books.

If they are reading, then I’ll ask what kind of books are you reading? If the individual is not reading a book that will help them improve themselves.

That is a great place to start. There is something magical about this. The moment you start reading a personal help book. The mind starts working and the creativity starts flowing.

2. Are you stepping away from your computer? This is a problem for internet marketers. For some reason they shut themselves from the outside world.

You need to get outside and mingle with people. Get interactive with people when you are running your errands.

You are probably wondering what does this have to do with content creation.

When the mind starts interacting with another human being it allows you to connect with individuals. Most importantly you start to be conversational which allows you to connect and relate with people.

That is why some bloggers are more powerful than others. They know how to connect.

3. Are you mixing up topics? Let me explain what I mean by this question by using my blog as an example. This blog is all about learning how to generate leads for your business using online methods.

Once in a while, I’ll mix it up with personal growth and business ownership mentality. By adding different topics into your content it starts to open up different doors in your readers mind.

Now, what you’ve done is made them aware of something that they were not probably thinking about. This is a very powerful strategy.

4. Are you mixing up your content delivery method? It is a good habit to mix up the delivery method of your content. Sometimes it is a lot easier to shot a video to explain or demonstrate something than writing it out.

There are times I’ll include other bloggers content into my own content. If I read another bloggers post and it was good. I’m going to find a way to include that into my blog post.

Now, most bloggers won’t do that because they are afraid that they won’t be looked at as an expert in their field. When in reality it does the opposite. It shows that you are an expert in your field and you do research to back up your work.

5. Are you making your old work, new again? If you take a look at some of the old work you’ve done 5-6 months ago. I bet, you have said, “Oh…man, I could have included this and that.”

Use your own work for inspiration to create new post. I’ve taken old written post and created new ones from it because it gave me new ideas.

Keep these in mind and they will help you come up with amazing content for your blog. Blogging isn’t difficult if you are properly prepared.

With that said, I hope you enjoy your weekend!

I really like the mix it up a bit, both regarding the content and the delivery. It keeps your readers coming back for more.

Thanks for sharing the content creation tips Josh.

I became more creative by making personal development a habit. The flow of creative ideas flows to us 24-7. It’s up to us to tap into it.

I follow your advice. I also receive inspirational ideas after meditating, or sitting quietly for 5-10 minutes. Writers causes writer’s block, and meditating helps you to realize this.

Hey Josh,

I really like this post.

I do have to pay attention to how much I get out of the house. I love getting out, but I’m pretty laid back and rarely get bored, no matter where I’m at.

This means I can go a long time without leaving the house, and so I need to make it a point to get out and be inspired by the outside world as well. ;) Life is an inspiration and never ceases to amaze me.

I also like your tip about older posts. It’s crossed my mind before but I haven’t really gone back through them…

Thanks for the great tips!

Josh,

You had some great ideas, some I have not thought of before.

Greg and I both work from home so we sit at the computer ALOT. We usually take the dog for a walk and we do alot of brainstorming then, but I never thought about getting out and talking to other people to get the mind flowing for connections!

We definately need to read more books, there are so many free ones that I have found online, just download to your computer. Of course maybe I should be going to Borders! haha. Awesome suggestion, I love getting out and talking to people, I just forget to do it!

Thank for all that you do.

Hey Josh,

Thanks for sharing these suggestions. I really like #2 and #5. You have to step away from your computer and intermingle with different people. This is a great way to figure out personalities and how you can relate to them. Also it’s a great way to see what people are talking about and finding out what they’re looking for ;) You may bump into a potential business partner or customer.

From looking at my old blogs, I have said that I could have put such and such in between these paragraphs. You can also see how your blogs have improved within the last 5 or 6 months by the content and also looking at statistics.

Thanks for all of this info. Josh

Josh@Network Marketing Consultant July 31, 2010 at 8:35 pm

Hey Josh,

I think the best thing you can do to overcome that mind block, as you have outlined in your first suggestion is to educate yourself.

A great way to do this is to read books like you mentioned, but also visit other website that are close to your sites niche. This will also help you maintain an awareness of what the competition is working on and also the ‘latest craze’.

Content creation dilemma is a common problem with webmaster and if you have the motivation to try a few new things like you have suggested, you should be fine.

Top class post Josh! I use all the ideas you mention.

Tied in with stepping away from your computer I find it is essential to just step away from business and make space for creativity to flow while we are not focused on business. We are about far more than just business. We are whole beings and finding balance and moderation in all things is essential. I get many great ideas when I am not concerned with business.

You are spot on with this one Josh, it is too easy to get bogged down on your computer and not be able to think outside the screen.

I still work outside a lot and it was only this morning that I was thinking about a book I am reading (about Richard Branson) and how it ties in with another subject I was thinking about and decided that it was a good idea for my next blog post.
