In order to have a popular blog you need to stand out from the rest of the noise on the Internet. The reasons you are giving are what make people, and their blogs, stand out in the crowd.

I guess if you want to be popular you’ve got to be prepared to divide opinion and be controversial sometimes. State what you believe in and state it loudly.
